Not the Edible Kind

Concerning Blackberries, that is...

I was walking down a hallway in the music building, and posted outside the door of a professor I have never had, there way an article that caught my attention. I stood there, read it, thought it was interesting, and just wanted to share it with you. I'll spare you my thoughts on this topic at this moment, but I'm sure with your comments, we can have quite a conversation.

Let me know what you think.

  1. Thanks for sharing that article, Jessica. It mirrored my feelings exactly. I think our society has grown increasingly rude with the advent of cellphones. Everywhere I go, I hear one sided conversations about nothing. And it seems like the more expensive the cellphone, the louder its owner talks, as if to say, "Look at me, everybody! I amd important and rich!"

Once I was in the SLC airport, trying to read a good book. A woman (I almost said lady) behind me was yelling in her cellphone, "Sue! Guess where I am. No, guess! Guess! You'll never guess! I'm in Salt Lake City!" Then she proceeded to talk about absolutely nothing for twenty minutes at the top of her voice. I put my book away; it was just too noisy. When she finally stopped, I got it out again but what do you think happened next? She called someone else and had the exact same conversation again!

I have seen men at Disneyland standing in line with their children talking to the office on their cellphones. So they are at Disneyland, but they are not really there at all. We are all connected, but not connected at all in ways that really matter. That is why I was the last person I know to get a cellphone, and that is why I try not to use it. Same goes for a PDA. I have one. It is my calendar. That is all. It doesn't take pictures. It doesn't play MP3s. It doesn't connect to the Internet. It is just a calendar.

Sorry to say so much. It's a good thing you didn't get me going on the loss of silence :)

  2. I agree 100% with this article, too! In fact, I am becoming a slave to the computer and blogs and facebook and almost everything else electronic. I am going to take a break tomorrow from these things, and see what else I can do. Thanks for inspiring me.
